Volvo V50 For Sale
Few small estate cars look as good or drive as well as a used Volvo V50. On a country road it's more fun than any load-hauler has the right to be. Punchy, economical diesel engines keep running costs down. However, the ride is firm, especially at low speeds, and there are plenty of roomier estates available for similar money.

Volvo V50 Review
For:Looks good, drives well, economical diesels
Against:Firm ride, not the most spacious estate
Autoquake.com verdict: star
Why buy one?
A used Volvo V50 handles as well as any small estate car we can think of. There's genuine poise through corners and impressive control over dips and crests. The V50 is also a handsome-looking car - that might not be something said of many Volvos a few years ago, but the Swedish car maker now regularly mixes style and practicality.
There's a choice of petrol or diesel engines. We rate the 1.6-litre diesel for economy and the 2.0-litre diesel for performance. If you really want to get where you're going in a hurry, the T5 petrol version is faster than most hot hatches.
Why think twice?
The trade off for such impressive control on bumpy roads is a stiff ride around town. A Vokswagen Golf Estate is more forgiving over the bumps. There are also plenty of more spacious estates than a second-hand V50.
How safe?
There's a long list of safety items fitted to each model. Although the V50 hasn't been tested by Euro NCAP, when the S40 (the saloon equivalent) was tested it scored five stars out of five for occupant protection.
What might go wrong?
Nothing major. The V50 finished a respectable 35th out of 101 cars in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.
What do the experts say?
'Volvo is one of the great estate makers - it's been doing it for decades. They've always been practical, but those launched in more recent years - such as the Volvo V50 - have been increasingly stylish, too.' Parkers.co.uk
