A used Volkswagen Touareg is a well equipped, fine-driving 4x4 Volkswagen Touareg For Sale

There's little need to look past the more basic versions of the Volkswagen Touareg. Every model comes with enough standard kit to open a branch of Currys. It's good to drive, too. That's especially true of the range-topping VW Touareg V10 TDI, although running costs for this version are monstrous. The Touareg 3.0 TDI is a better choice.

Volkswagen Touareg Review

For:Capable on Tarmac, well equipped, strong diesels

Against:Just five seats, firm ride

Autoquake.com verdict: star

Why buy one?

For a big 4x4, a used Volkswagen Touareg is good to drive. If you ever need to head off road, it's capable in the wilds, too.

There's plenty of space inside for five, and every version comes well equipped. Luggage room is plentiful as well.

The diesel models are the ones to go for. The 3.0-litre strikes the best balance between price, performance and economy.

Why think twice?

Because many rivals are more practical. The Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Land Rover Discovery all have seven seats as standard or as an option, while Touareg buyers make do with five. And while a second-hand Touareg is good to drive, the ride is rather too firm for comfort. The range-topping V10 may be fun, but the running costs will soon wipe the smile from your face.

How safe?

This is a big, heavy car, so if anything runs into you it's likely to come off second best. Back in 2004 the Touareg scored five out of five for occupant protection from crash test experts Euro NCAP.

What might go wrong?

Used Touaregs are usually every bit as robust as they look. On 2003 cars, it's worth checking that recall work on the parking brake and rear seatbelts has been carried out, but don't expect major trouble.

What do the experts say?

'A classy and comfortable car with good four-wheel-drive ability.' Parkers.co.uk

Anything else I should know?

A facelift in 2007 included a new-look front end, and some other detail changes.

Which one should I buy?

  • Greenest? Touareg 2.5 TDI
  • Fastest? Touareg 5.0 V10 TDI R50
  • Best? Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI SE
