Why buy one?
You won't find a classier supermini than a used Volkswagen Polo. There's plenty of substance beneath the style, with a comfortable ride and little wind or road noise. This is one small car that's perfectly at home on long journeys.
There's a broad range of engines to choose from, many of them with extremely low emissions and good fuel economy. For most needs, the humble 1.2 has perky enough performance with impressive fuel consumption and low insurance costs.
Why think twice?
Some rivals, such as the Ford Fiesta, are more fun to drive. The interior design is rather bland, although there's nothing wrong with the way it's put together.
How safe?
Levels of safety kit vary from model to model, but expect two front airbags and anti-lock brakes at the very least. Crash test experts Euro NCAP gave the car a four-star rating.
What might go wrong?
Not much. Many owners replace their Polo with another Polo, which tells you what you need to know.
