The Passat does most things very well, and nothing badly. The cabin is huge, with plenty of space to stretch out even for those in the back seats.
For such a big car, the Passat is nimble and alert, but this liveliness doesn't come at the expense of a supple ride. This is a very comfortable car for long drives.
There's a broad range of engines to choose from, whether you're looking for speed, economy or a mixture of the two.
Why think twice?
Because of a used Volkswagen Passat's upmarket image, you'll pay a little more for one than you might most rivals. What's more, there's no hatchback version.
Really keen drivers will find a Ford Mondeo is more fun.
How safe?
