The Vauxhall Meriva is an MPV that's no bigger than a supermini. Practical and fun Vauxhall Meriva For Sale

Vauxhall packs a lot of clever thinking into a very small package with the Vauxhall Meriva. There's room for five inside, with rear seats which move independently of one another and fold away when not needed to create a pint-sized van. Entry-level Merivas are poorly equipped, though.

Vauxhall Meriva Review

For:Versatile cabin, spacious for such a small car, entertaining drive

Against:Poor visibility, low equipment levels on cheaper models

Autoquake.com verdict: star

Why buy one?

A used Vauxhall Meriva is as practical as small cars get. You won't believe how much space Vauxhall has squeezed into a car no bigger than a supermini. Four adults can easily get comfortable - five at a pinch.

A second-hand Meriva is ingenious as well as roomy. The three rear seats slide back and forth independently of one another, and fold away into the floor. With the seats stashed, there's 1410 litres of luggage space - as much as some estate cars.

While making the Meriva practical Vauxhall hasn't forgotten that small cars should be fun, too. It's a lively drive, with willing engines and agile cornering.

Why think twice?

Thick windscreen pillars make for poor forward visibility. It's a pain when pulling away from junctions and roundabouts. The cheapest models in the range, such as Life trim, don't have much in the way of toys.

How safe?

The Meriva scored four out of five stars for adult occupant protection when crash tested by Euro NCAP. That's a solid score, but not as good as some rivals such as the Renault Modus.

What might go wrong?

A few owners do report mechanical faults with their Merivas, which contributed to a disappointing 90th place out of 101 cars in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.

What do the experts say?

'Pricey in comparison to some, but it's still a very good all-rounder.' What Car?
