Why buy one?

Reliability. A used Toyota Yaris will cope with mile after mile and keep coming back for more.

It won't cost much to run, either. Insurance groups are low, and the engines sip fuel.

Considering that the Yaris is shorter than most rivals, there's plenty of space inside. On the latest model (06-) the rear seats slide back on runners to give excellent legroom, although this comes at the expense of boot space. The previous Yaris isn't as roomy, but lower prices make it good value.

Why think twice?

A second-hand Toyota Yaris isn't the car to choose for regular motorway trips. It's too noisy and the ride is too bouncy. Strong demand means prices remain quite high, especially for the current-shape car. You'll get a newer model for the same money if you choose a Vauxhall Corsa

How safe?

A used Yaris is one of the safest superminis you can buy. The current model scored five out of five for occupant protection in Euro NCAP crash tests. The older Yaris scored four stars.

What might go wrong?

Very little. The Toyota Yaris finished 12th out of 101 cars in the 209 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.
