Toyota Corolla For Sale

Used cars don't get any more sensible than the Toyota Corolla Toyota Corolla For Sale

You can't really go wrong with a used Toyota Corolla. It's exceptionally reliable, well made and spacious. All versions drive well, and the diesels are very economical. However, the design of the exterior and cabin is rather uninspired, and used prices are a little higher than for many small hatches.

Toyota Corolla Review

For:Roomy, reliable, well built

Against:Smallest diesel short of punch, pricier than some rivals

Autoquake.com verdict: star

Why buy one?

The Toyota Corolla is the definition of a sensible used buy. There's plenty of space inside, the cabin is well built and reliability is every bit as good as you'd expect of a Toyota. For patriotic buyers, there's the bonus of knowing the hatchback was built in Britain, too.

Why think twice?

The low-powered diesel is rather gutless, although good fuel economy is some compensation. Toyota's strong reputation on the used market keeps prices strong, so you'll pay more than you would for a Ford Focus of the same age.

The Corolla looks a little staid, and the Sport Compressor hot hatch isn't as rewarding to drive as a Volkswagen Golf GTI.

How safe?

The Corolla scored a respectable four out five stars when crash tested by Euro NCAP in 2002. The Corolla Verso went one better in 2004, earning five stars.

What might go wrong?

Not a lot. The Corolla finished 16th of 101 cars in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.

What do the experts say?

'Decent room, a solid interior and a good drive. Reliable, too.' What Car?

Anything else I should know?

The Corolla was replaced by the Toyota Auris in 2007. If you're looking for a nearly new Toyota hatchback, take a look at one of these instead.

Which one should I buy?

  • Greenest? Corolla 1.4 D-4D
  • Fastest? Corolla 1.8 Sport Compressor
  • Best? Corolla 1.6 VVT-i T3 5dr
