Toyota Avensis For Sale
There are better looking and more exciting family cars than a used Toyota Avensis, but few can match its broad talents. Reliability is extremely good, the driving position is comfortable, and there's plenty of space inside. The hushed cabin makes this a great car for long drives, especially if you choose a punchy and economical diesel.

Toyota Avensis Review
For:Comfortable, reliable, easy to drive
Against:Unexciting to look at, a Ford Mondeo is more rewarding to drive
Autoquake.com verdict: star
Why buy one?
A used Toyota Avensis ticks all the right boxes. Reliability is a given, so you can buy a high-mileage example without worry. A good driving position means long journeys can be tackled in comfort, the engines are quiet and wind and road noise stay in the background. That's especially true of the current car (09-), although the previous generation (03-09) is better value.
Light, slick controls make any Avensis an easy car to drive.
Why think twice?
A second-hand Avensis is a car you respect and admire rather than fall in love with. There's little flair and imagination in the design, and if you enjoy driving, you'll have more fun in a Ford Mondeo. Solid resale values are good news if you already own a used Avensis, but bad news if you're searching for a bargain.
How safe?
The Avensis was one of the first cars to feature an airbag for the driver's knees, which shows you the lengths Toyota has gone to make this a safe car. The new model scored five out of five when crash tested by Euro NCAP in 2009. The previous car also picked up a five star rating.
What might go wrong?
We've heard of some clutches wearing quite early, but otherwise the Avensis gets a clean bill of health.
