You'll be surprised how much space Renault has managed to squeeze into such a small car. Even adults can get comfortable in the back, especially in the slightly larger Grand Modus version. As you'd expect of a Renault, safety standards are excellent, with plenty of airbags and a five-star crash test result from Euro NCAP.

Renault Modus Review

For:Roomy cabin, refined, good equipment on most models

Against:Not much fun to drive, entry-level petrol is slow

Autoquake.com verdict: star

Why buy one?

For a car no bigger than most superminis, a used Renault Modus packs in plenty of space. That's especially true if you go for the larger Grand Modus version. Either way, this is a practical car, with sliding rear seats to juggle passenger and luggage room. There's plenty of stowage around the cabin, too.

Long journeys are no chore, thanks to refined engines and little wind or road noise. Diesel models in particular are a good choice if you cover a lot of miles. Whichever engine you go for, equipment levels are strong.

Why think twice?

If you're looking for a small car with a fun, lively character, a second-hand Modus isn't for you. It's more at home around town or on the motorway than a favourite back route. If driving pleasure is a priority the Vauxhall Meriva is a better bet. The 75bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine is fine around town, but it's found wanting on faster roads.

How safe?

Renaults consistently perform very well in Euro NCAP crash tests, and the Modus is no exception. It scored five stars for adult occupant protection in Euro NCAP crash tests.

What might go wrong?

Renault doesn't have the strongest reputation for reliability, so don't be surprised by the odd niggling fault with a used Modus.

What do the experts say?

'If you want a more practical version of a small hatchback, but don't need a people carrier, then the Renault Modus could be the answer' Parker's

Anything else I should know?
