Renault Clio For Sale - Used Renault Clio

The Renault Clio is a refined, spacious and comfortable supermini Renault Clio For Sale - Used Renault Clio

The Renault Clio is the car most superminis would like to be when they grow up. It might fit into the smallest parking spaces, but it's also roomy, refined and comfortable on long journeys. Safety standards are excellent, too. Lifeless steering means a used Clio isn't as much fun to drive as some small cars, though.

Against:Lifeless steering, some similar cars cost less

Autoquake.com verdict: star

Why buy one?

A used Renault Clio is one of the most grown-up superminis you can buy, especially if you go for the current model (05-). It drives like a much bigger car, with a comfortable ride and little noise to disturb the peace in the roomy cabin. Long journeys are relaxed and enjoyable, so if you are thinking of down-sizing from a larger model, the Clio is a good choice.

Running costs are low, especially if you go for one of the diesels or small capacity petrol models.

Why think twice?

A Ford Fiesta of similar age and mileage will cost less, and should have lower servicing bills, too. The Clio's steering is lifeless, which means it's less fun to drive than many superminis.

The previous-shape Clio (98-05) is cheaper than today's car but isn't as roomy or refined.

How safe?

Renault was one of the first manufacturers to take the Euro NCAP crash test programme seriously, and has a strong record of building safe cars. The Clio scored five stars out of five in 2005. The previous model scored four out of five.

What might go wrong?

A used Clio will rarely have major mechanical problems. However, there are enough niggling faults to see the Renault finish 83rd out of 101 cars in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.

What do the experts say?

"A chic but grown-up supermini that oozes quality." What Car?
