A used Peugeot 308 is a good choice if you value high-speed refinement and a well made cabin, especially if you choose a diesel. It's also safe and well equipped. The ride could be more comfortable, though, and you couldn't call the 308 fun. More space in the rear seats would be useful.

Why buy one?
If you cover a lot of miles and want to do so in comfort, a used Peugeot 308 is a good choice. That's especially true if you choose a diesel. They're economical and quiet. Go for the 2.0-litre diesel and you get an impressive turn of speed, too.
The interior is well made and there's lots of safety kit on all models.
Why think twice?
The steering is vague and woolly, so there's not much fun to be had behind the wheel. The ride isn't great either, although it does improve with a full load of passengers and luggage.
It's a shame there's not more rear legroom, and the driving position could also do with improvement. The steering wheel and pedals are offset too far to the left.
How safe?
A used 308 is a safe car. It scored five out of five stars for occupant protection from crash test experts Euro NCAP. Not that anybody wants to be run over, but if you are going to be hit by a car, hope that it's a Peugeot 308: it scored three out of four for pedestrian safety. That's much better than many rivals.
What might go wrong?
Early signs are the 308 is an improvement over the Peugeot 307 it replaced, but it needs to be. Its predecessor was not a very reliable car.
