Honda CR-V Review
For:Green for a 4x4, drives well, roomy
Against:Won't go far off road, some rivals have more luggage space
Autoquake.com verdict: star
Why buy one?
Think all 4x4s are dirty and thirsty? A used Honda CR-V will make you think again. The 2.2-litre diesel (which is the one to have) emits just 173g/km of carbon dioxide. Fuel economy of 43.5mpg will help keep running costs down, too.
The CR-V's green credentials are no barrier to strong performance. The engine is more than strong enough to cope with a fully loaded car. Neat and tidy handling and a comfortable ride make the Honda CR-V enjoyable to drive and travel in, too. What's more, there's plenty of head- and legroom, even in the back seats.
The previous model (02-06) is also roomy and capable, but the current car is worth the price premium.
Why think twice?
If you want to go off road, there are any number of better choices than a second-hand Honda CR-V. The Land Rover Freelandersprings to mind. While there's lots of room for passengers, some rivals have more luggage room.
How safe?
A used Honda CR-V should prove to be safe should the worst happen. Both the most recent generations have scored four out of five stars for occupant protection in Euro NCAP crash tests.
What might go wrong?
Not a lot. It's worth keeping a careful eye on oil levels with the 2.2-litre diesel, but otherwise expect few problems. The Honda finished 9th out of 101 cars in the JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.
What do the experts say?
'Terrific family transport, but now so on-road orientated that it may as well be a proper car.' 4Car
