Why buy one?

Because a Ford Mondeo is the best family car on sale. The new Ford Mondeo, introduced in 2007, does almost everything well and nothing badly.

It's more rewarding to drive than any other large family car, with sharp steering and agile handling. The ride is comfortable, too. Inside, the cabin is exceptionally spacious and better built than you might expect. There's plenty of luggage room, and that goes double for the estate.

There are many different engine variants to choose from with the current Ford Mondeo, starting with 2.0-litre petrols up to extremely quick 2.5-litre turbos. If you're counting the pennies or want to do your bit to bring down carbon emissions, look out for the Mondeo Econetic diesel.

In spite of being a quality car, Mondeo second-hand prices are keen. If you buy one of the previous-generation Mondeos (00-07), they're lower still. The older model isn't as roomy or refined as today's car, but it still makes a great used buy.

Why think twice?

There aren't many downsides to running a used Ford Mondeo. For some, the current car is just too big, which can be a pain when squeezing into parking spaces. The latest Citroen C5 is quieter on the motorway, but we're struggling to think of other negatives worth mentioning.

How safe?

A second-hand Ford Mondeo is a safe car. The previous model scored four out of five for occupant protection in Euro NCAP crash tests. The new car scored five out of five.

Any current-shape Mondeo should have stability control to keep you on the road and a full complement of airbags. There's even one to protect the driver's knees.

What might go wrong?

Don't worry unduly about problems with a used Ford Mondeo. The keyless entry system on some versions has been known to play up, and some 2.0-litre diesels have needed a software update on the ECU. Generally speaking, however, the mechanical parts are robust.

What do the experts say?

'Perfect family car and great value.' What Car?
