Why buy one?

A used BMW Z4 is a proper sports car. Even the smaller engines, like the 2.0-litre petrol, provide a decent turn of speed. Choose a 3.0-litre petrol and there are few convertibles and coupes which accelerate harder.

A second-hand Z4 is as capable around the bends as down the straights, so keen drivers will really enjoy this car.

The latest model (09-) is even more capable, although it will remain an expensive buy for some time to come.

Why think twice?

A used BMW Z4 isn't the most practical car, with just two seats and a relatively small boot. The steering isn't as tactile as a Porsche Boxster's, and the ride is a little firm for some tastes.

How safe?

The newest model hasn't been tested by car safety organisation, Euro NCAP, although it comes with a comprehensive list of safety kit. The older model has been tested, scoring four out of five stars for adult occupant protection back in 2004.

What might go wrong?

The Z4 is a well made car, so don't expect major problems. If buying a used convertible car, make sure the hood is working properly as it's expensive to replace. Check for signs of crash damage, too. Otherwise, you can buy with confidence.
