BMW X6 For Sale
It's a strange car, the BMW X6. On the one hand, it's great to drive, effortlessly fast and well equipped. On the other, a used X6 is cramped in the back, can only seat four, and is expensive to buy and run. If you can live with the compromises, the X6 is compelling fun.

BMW X6 Review
For:Exceptional handling, strong performance, well made
Against:Not as practical as most big 4x4s, costly to buy and run, a strange concept
Autoquake.com verdict: star
Why buy one?
What a used BMW X6 does well, it does very well. How BMW makes two tonnes of metal, plastic and leather handle so brilliantly is a bit of a mystery, but the X6 devours corners with almost never-ending grip and hardly any body roll. Even the least powerful engine in a BMW X6 puts out 232bhp, so it eats up the straights, too.
Why think twice?
It's hard to know what question a second-hand X6 answers. There are just four seats rather than the five or seven you usually get in a big SUV. The sloping, coupe-style roofline means there's not that much headroom in the back. It's expensive to buy, and although economy is reasonable if you go for a diesel, running costs are high.
Most buyers would be better off with a BMW X5, which is very nearly as good to drive but far more practical.
How safe?
A used X6 is a very safe car. There's a long list of safety equipment fitted to every model.
What might go wrong?
There are relatively few X6 models around, so it's hard to draw firm conclusions. However, the X5 with which the X6 shares many parts has a good reputation, and BMW finished a respectable ninth out of 29 manufacturers in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.
What do the experts say?
'The X6 is superb to drive, blending strong acceleration with the agility of a sports saloon. The four-seat layout and high prices count against it.' 'It's a truly radical design with a super-sharp driving experience that lives up to the German firm's reputation' Auto Express
Anything else I should know?
If you've set your heart on a sporty 4x4, the Porsche Cayenne is also worth a look.
