Why buy one?
Looking for a 4x4 car which drives like a sports car? You've just found it. SUVs really shouldn't be able to go around corners so quickly, but nobody seems to have told BMW.
There's lots of space inside and plenty of room for luggage, so a used BMW X3 makes a fine family car.
The engines are refined and powerful. The 2.0-litre diesel is the pick, with strong performance and good economy for a 4x4.
Why think twice?
The biggest problem with the X3 is the ride. It's too firm for comfort, even over smooth surfaces. M Sport models are the worst offenders.
Although the used values of 4x4s have fallen in recent years, a second-hand BMW X3 is not a cheap car compared to rivals with less upmarket badges like the Ford Kuga, VW Tiguan or the Toyota Rav 4.
How safe?
Very. All models have a comprehensive list of airbags and driver aids. Crash test experts Euro NCAP gave the BMW X3 a four-star rating.
What might go wrong?
Don't expect any major problems. BMW finished 9th out of 29 makes in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.
