BMW 1 Series For Sale
If you want an upmarket hatchback that's also great to drive, look no further. For a sporty car the BMW 1 Series is exceptionally economical and cheap to run, especially if you go for a diesel. It's cramped in the back and the ride is firm. Otherwise there's a lot to like about the 1 Series.

BMW 1 Series Review
For:Fun to drive, brilliant engines, upmarket image
Against:Expensive compared to mainstream rivals
Autoquake.com verdict: star
Why buy one?
A used BMW 1 Series is about as fun as small hatchbacks get. If you don't grin after a back-roads drive in a 1 Series, there's something wrong with your mouth.
Sports car-like handling is matched with a fine range of engines. The smaller petrol cars, such as the 115bhp BMW 116i, are the best value used buys. The diesel cars cost a little more but offer exceptional fuel economy and strong performance.
Why think twice?
A second-hand BMW 1 Series might corner like a sports car, but it rides like one, too. You'll feel lumps and bumps in the road, especially at low speeds.
Drivers with a growing family will find the back seats rather cramped, and the boot is on the small side, too. Because the 1 Series is so desirable, used prices are strong, so you'll pay more for one than a more mainstream model of a similar type and age, like a VW Golf or a Ford Focus.
How safe?
Crash test experts Euro NCAP awarded five out of five stars when the BMW 1 Series was tested in 2004. Most models come with a full range of airbags, traction control and stability control.
What might go wrong?
Don't expect any big headaches with a used 1 Series. It performs well in reliability surveys, and finished a respectable 41st out of 101 models in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.
What do the experts say?
'The sharpest driving car in its class.' Whatcar.com
