For:Fast, good looking, latest model is great to drive

Against:The original TT could have been more rewarding for the driver

Autoquake.com verdict: star

Why buy one?

Because the Audi TT is one of the most distinctive and dramatic looking sports cars of the last decade. When the car first arrived in 1999, there was nothing else quite like it on the roads.

Even now, the iconic shape has hardly dated, and when the second-generation Audi TT arrived in 2006 it updated the successful design rather than heading in a new direction.

The new Audi TT did improve on the old car's ride and handling, making it a much more fluent and tactile car. It's the one to go for if you love driving. But if you want a design icon on your drive, the original TT is a classic.

Why think twice?

The old Audi TT isn't as much fun as rivals such as the Porsche Boxster, although all versions are fast. Strong demand keeps used Audi TT prices high, so the current model in particular is not cheap.

How safe?

The current car has yet to be tested by crash test experts Euro NCAP, but comes with a comprehensive roster of safety kit. The old model scored four out of five for occupant protection when it was tested in 2003, so a second-hand Audi TT should prove a safe car.

What might go wrong?

A used TT should be reliable so long as it has been cared for properly. However, listen for knocking noises from the suspension, which may be a sign of problems with the anti-roll bars. Electrical glitches with the dashboard aren't unheard of.

What do the experts say?

'The Audi TT Coupe takes over where the old one left off. There's a reason for the TT's apparent ubiquity; it's a genuinely great car.' Top Gear
