Few cars match the understated class of a used Audi A6. The cabin quality puts some luxury cars to shame, with a superb finish and plenty of space. It's good to drive, too, with composed handling and a choice of fast, frugal diesels. The big petrol models are expensive to run, though.

Review

For:Beautiful cabin, spacious, fast, frugal diesels

Against:A BMW 5 Series is more exciting, big petrols are expensive to run

Autoquake.com verdict: star

Why buy one?

The Audi A6's cabin puts some luxury cars to shame. There's lots of space inside for passengers and luggage and Audi's trademark upmarket finish.

There's a broad choice of engines to choose from. The TFSI petrol models are surprisingly efficient and the diesels make owning a big executive saloon more affordable.

Why think twice?

You'll have more fun behind the wheel of a BMW 5 Series, although that's not to say that a used Audi A6 is dull to drive - far from it.

The big V8 petrols will hit your wallet hard on road tax, fuel and insurance.

How safe?

Very. Any second-hand A6 will have a broad range of safety equipment fitted. When tested by crash test experts Euro NCAP in 2004 it scored five stars out of five for occupant protection.

What might go wrong?

A used A6 shouldn't be too troublesome, although if things do go wrong the bill won't be cheap. The A6 finished an excellent 6th out of 101 cars in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.

What do the experts say?

'Big on style, prestige and space.' Whatcar.com

Anything else I should know?

Audi also builds the Audi A6 Allroad, a cross between a 4x4 and estate car. It makes a good alternative to a large 4x4. You can find an owners' club at www.audiclub.co.uk.
