Audi A4 Review
For:Stylish, roomy, well made cabin
Against:Audi A4 might not be as much fun as a BMW 3 Series, firm ride
Autoquake.com verdict: star
Why buy one?
Used Audi A4 are not as pushy as a BMW 3 Series, or as conservative as a Mercedes C Class, but they exude understated class.
It's a satisfying car to drive, with plenty of space and a well finished cabin. The latest Audi A4 (08-) has the new generation of common-rail diesels, which brought big improvements in refinement. However, the previous version (05-08) is less expensive to buy and better value for money.
Why think twice?
Like any car with a prestige badge, a second-hand Audi A4 costs more to buy than a similar saloon with a mainstream badge. The ride is firm, especially on sporty versions, while a BMW 3 Series is more fun to drive.
The driving position on the latest model isn't perfect, as the pedals are offset to the right.
How safe?
A used Audi A4 should keep you and yours safe. When crash test experts Euro NCAP tested today's car and the previous generation, both scored five out of five for occupant protection.
What might go wrong?
Don't expect any major problems, although the oil level needs to be checked regularly on the diesel to avoid expensive bills. The car finished 51st out of 101 cars in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey. That's not as high as the 3 Series or the C-Class.
What do the experts say?
'It can't quite better its rivals, but it remains a worthy contender.' Parkers.co.uk
