Audi A3 For Sale
You'll pay a little more for a used Audi A3 than for your average small hatch, but with good reason. The Audi A3 is a stylish car, with a queue of potential buyers for each one. The cabin is beautifully built, and most versions perform well with good economy. The sporty models could be more fun, though.

Audi A3 Review
For:Classy cabin, practical, attractive design
Against:Rivals are cheaper, sporty models could be more fun
Autoquake.com verdict: star
Why buy one?
Think of a used Audi A3 as a Volkswagen Golf dressed up for a night on the town. Like the Golf on which it is based, the A3 does all the sensible things well, with a spacious interior, good reliability and broad choice of engines. It's just that little bit more upmarket and stylish.
The first A3 (sold from 1996) was a hatchback. The second-generation car arrived in 2003. There are now three bodystyles to choose from, and a wide choice of engines. The three-door hatch is most common, but there's also a five-door, called Sportback, which was introduced in 2004. A Cabriolet arrived in 2008.
The Cabriolet wins for style, but the Sportback is the most practical buy. Diesel buyers should look out for models from 2008 onwards, when the smoother and quieter common rail diesels were introduced.
Why think twice?
Sporty versions like the S3 are quick but not as much fun as they should be. Blame steering that's rather short on feel.
The Audi name more or less guarantees a willing queue of buyers, so prices for a used A3 are on the firm side. Similar cars with a less attractive badge cost considerably less.
How safe?
Both the first and second-generation A3 scored a respectable four out of five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests.
What might go wrong?
A second-hand A3 should be a reliable car. It finished 38th out of 101 models in the 2009 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey.
What do the experts say?
'The refreshed A3 is now better than ever.' 4 Car
Anything else I should know?
A new A3 should arrive in 2010, so expect used examples to appear by 2011.
Which one should I buy?
- Greenest? Audi A3 1.9 TDIe
- Fastest? Audi S3
- Best? Audi A3 2.0 TFSI SE
