If you need plenty of space to transport your growing family, a used 7 seater has to be the way to go. There are plenty of 7 seat MPVs, some with the added practicality of seats which fold into the floor when not needed. If you want a 7 seater with a more rugged image, 4x4 cars are another option to explore.

A Land Rover Discovery is the ultimate go-anywhere 7 seater. This huge car has loads of space inside, even for those in the third row of seats. In spite of its dimensions, this isn't an intimidating car to drive, thanks to excellent visibility and the smooth automatic transmission. Reliability hasn't been a strong point for Land Rover over the years, but recent cars are much improved.

Best 7 seater MPV

There are plenty of good used 7 seat MPVs to choose from, but pushed to name a favourite we'd recommend the Ford S-Max. It's the best MPV to drive bar none and practical with it, thanks to seats which quickly fold into the floor when not in use. If the S-Max has a weakness, it's that there's not much luggage space if all 7 seats are occupied. Should that put you off, the Ford Galaxy drives nearly as well and has more luggage room. It's also more spacious for passengers in the third row.

Best 7 seater for luggage space

If you regularly carry seven and their luggage try the Chrysler Grand Voyager. This enormous MPV has space for bag after bag even if every seat is occupied. There's extra room under the floor in the space the seats fold into. Petrol versions are cheapest to buy, although the diesel is more common and much less expensive to run.

Best 7 seater for reliability

Try the Toyota Corolla Verso. Just as you'd expect of a Toyota, very little goes wrong with this car. It's not the roomiest 7 seater but the seats fold into the floor for extra luggage space and the well made cabin should take anything your family can throw at it.
