Polluters 'to keep driving'

Motorists in London are snubbing calls to use their vehicles less even though they accept they may be ruining the environment, a survey reveals today.

A staggering 67 per cent said they realised the damage they were doing but did not make any effort to mend their eco-friendly ways.

Only one in ten supported car-sharing schemes as a way of tackling pollution and congestion, with 64 per cent saying a massive improvement in public transport was the only thing that would get them off the roads. But Londoners said they were willing to pay for their motoring habits, with 65 per cent supporting higher tax on cars with high emissions.

And 66 per cent back the use of alternative fuels as the way to cut pollution, with two thirds saying they would consider using an electric vehicle. The survey – conducted by the online retailer Autoquake – also revealed that 60 per cent of drivers were against the congestion charge.

Natalie Mead of Autoquake said: "While respondents seem reluctant to change their habits immediately, it is encouraging to see that they view this as something that will affect their vehicle choices moving forward."
